Eczema & Psoriasis Treatment Santa Barbara

Eczema

Eczema is a skin disease, also referred to as atopic dermatitis. Eczema may develop in infants or young children as a dry, red, itchy rash. Most people who will develop eczema develop it before five years of age. There may be a genetic role in eczema and frequently people with eczema may also have hay fever or asthma or allergies.

When a child has eczema, it can be difficult for parents to know what to do to help ease a child’s discomfort. A treatment plan that includes skin care can reduce flare-ups and ease much of the discomfort. Most treatments entail adding additional water or hydration to the skin, and certain medications help resolve the rash and improve the condition. A dermatologist will create a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs. Most treatment plans consist of skin care, medical therapies and tips to avoid flare- ups.

Psoriasis

Many people who have psoriasis will have this medical condition for life. It is possible to see clearer skin by learning about psoriasis and seeing a dermatologist for treatment. Research has shown that the person’s immune system plays an important role. It seems that the immune system mistakenly activates a type of white blood cell called a T cell. Once activated, the T cells trigger a reaction, causing the skin cells to grow too quickly. New skin cells form in days rather than weeks. The body does not shed these skin cells, so the cells pile up on the surface of the skin. This buildup of cells that turn over too quickly and does not shed appropriately results in the rash that most people know as psoriasis, red scaling thickened plaques on areas of the body, extremities or scalp.

While there is no cure for psoriasis, treatment can help control psoriasis. Because psoriasis can be stubborn, gaining control may require trying different types of treatment. Your best option is to see a dermatologist and discuss what type of regimen will work best for you.
